Joint Press Release – Brookings Municipal Utilities & Brookings-Deuel Rural Water System
Brookings, SD - September 27, 2023- Brookings Municipal Utilities
Brookings Municipal Utilities (BMU) Board and Brookings-Deuel Rural Water System (BDRWS) have approved an agreement to transfer 44 customers and existing infrastructure from the BDRWS system to the BMU system. The mutually beneficial agreement transfers an area on the east and northeast side of Brookings where City growth continues to occur. All customers being transferred either reside within, or are contiguous to, City limits. In general, rural water systems typically provide water to users outside municipal boundaries. Further, BMU construction projects provide a unique opportunity to efficiently transfer these customers to the municipal system. The transfer will eliminate areas of system overlap and more consistently provide fire protection to customers within City limits.
BMU will be reaching out to impacted customers to explain the water service transition and to assist each customer directly as needed. The customer transition will occur incrementally over the course of the next year and will be complete no later than October 31, 2024.
BMU will compensate BDRWS approximately $94,100 for the agreed upon transfer of customers and infrastructure.
BMU looks forward to working with our new customers and appreciates the on-going collaborative working relationship we have enjoyed with Brookings-Deuel Rural Water System.
