Brookings Municipal Utilities Privacy Policy

We take your privacy seriously and we want you to know why and how we collect, use, share, and protect your information.

Account Holders

We are committed to protect and maintain the privacy of our customer’s personal information. We apologize for any inconvenience this causes to anyone requesting information about a service account.

We want our customers to know that we keep their personal account information confidential. This includes service address, mailing address, non-service billed amounts, balance due, method of payment, and the content of any communication we have with them. However, we are allowed to provide usage-based information for an address when a request is received.

We occasionally hire other companies to provide limited services on our behalf, including printing, delivering or mailing, customer satisfaction surveys, and analyzing data. We will only provide those companies the information they need to deliver the service, and they are contractually prohibited from using that information for any other purpose.

  • If there are specific people such as a spouse, roommates, friends, or family members that you authorize on the account, we are able to release account information to them. Please call 605-697-8467 to tell us of anyone that is authorized on your account.
  • Brookings Municipal Utilities is allowed to provide anyone with average-usage information for a requested address; realtors and landlords use this to illustrate how much utilities may cost for a potential buyer or resident.
  • If we receive a subpoena for information on your account, we are required by law to comply and will respond with information requested.

Information You Provide to Us

Personally Identifiable Information (PII) is only collected online if that information is voluntarily submitted to us. The information provided to us via any form, application, or request for information will never be sold to other organizations for any purpose. We may use the data to help us evaluate our services.

How we use customers’ non-personal information

In addition to the usage-based information for an address as described above, BMU may combine data about your electricity and water usage in various formats. This anonymized and/or aggregated data is not subject to privacy restrictions. We use the information to manage, provide, and improve our services and business operations.
