General Information about Brookings Municipal Utilities The City of Brookings has operated the telephone, electric, water and wastewater utilities since the early 1900's. These enterprise funds were managed and controlled by the City Commission until 1970 when the community voted to vest management and control in an autonomous, five member, Utility Board, appointed by the Mayor and City Commission. In 1997, the community approved a Home Rule Charter and in 1999, it adopted the Council-Manager form of government. The telephone utility is a major component of BMU, providing both wireline service to Brookings community and wireless service as a Sprint PCS affiliate to eastern South Dakota and northwest Iowa. Local telephone service is provided under the name Swiftel Communications. Additional information can be found at www.swiftel.net. The electric utility is a distribution utility which purchases approximately 40 percent of its power from federal hydro-facilities and approximately 60 percent from a joint action municipal power agency. Power is delivered to approximately 7,500 customers at very affordable rates. Our delivery capacity is approximately 70 MW with a current peak of 45 MW. Our transmission and distribution systems along with our substations are well-maintained and not in need of major upgrades in the foreseeable future. Two well fields, one with six wells and one with four wells, supply the water system. Two water plants, a 1957 2.5 MGD plant and a 1972 4.0 MGD plant, supply water to the distribution system with four water towers. The city is located over an abundant source of high quality water, free of heavy metals and organic contaminants. Our wastewater plant and interceptor line system was constructed in 1980.
The 6 MGD plant utilizes rotating biological contactors, activated sludge
and sand filters and has consistently met all EPA standards. The collection
system is made up of 84 miles of pipe and 4 lift stations. Brookings Municipal Utilities Office Location for Telephone Services Swiftel Communications/Sprint PCS Center Brookings Municipal Utilities Utility Board
