Locating

Please check with your local utility company before digging in your yard to determine if underground electric lines run through your yard. Brookings Municipal Utilities staff will come to your home or business and show you where the underground lines are located. There is no charge. We do ask that someone be there to avoid any confusion as to where you will be digging. Please call the Service Department at (605) 697-8418 to schedule an appointment.

Street Lighting

Brookings Municipal Utilities takes pride in having one of the best-lit cities in the nation. One of the reasons for this is our commitment to an ongoing maintenance program to keep the lights on. If you notice lights out, or notice a light that is stuck on, we would appreciate it if you notify us. Please call our Service Department at 697-8418 and tell us the address of the light or notify us using the Online Streetlight Problem Report. A good way to report it is by direction from an intersection. An example is 6th street and 22nd avenue, third light south, West Side of the street.

Signal Lights

The location, timing and coordination of Signal Lighting is the responsibility of the City Engineers office and the State of South Dakota. However, Brookings Municipal Utilities performs all maintenance on signal lights in the City of Brookings. This maintenance is only to keep the signal lights operating as specified by the City Engineer. If you see a signal light out or an intersection that does not seem to be operating properly, please contact us at (605) 697-8418.

Temporary Service

During the construction of new buildings most people require power to run construction equipment before permanent electrical power is installed in the new structure. Brookings Municipal Utilities can provide a temporary service if needed.

All temporary services are required to be installed within ten feet of a suitable electrical transformer or electrical pedestal. The contractor can run their own wires from the temporary service to the construction site as they require. These wires can be plugged and unplugged to the temporary. Other solutions are:

  • Have the permanent electrical service, not the stub in service, installed as one of the first jobs of the construction project. A new service however, may take five to seven days for it to be installed. It will be longer if the development is new and the appropriate electrical equipment has not been installed. This may require that the block layer wait until power is present or they can provide their own generation.

  • Have an electrician install a temporary underground service to which the temporary could then be connected.
Brookings Municipal Utilities temporary services have a 50-amp 4-wire mobile home socket in them. This socket can be used to plug a load center with many receptacles in and put nearer the construction site. This unit could be plugged in and unplugged as necessary.

Anyone who provides their own temporary will need to provide the wire to connect the transformer or pedestal to the temporary. Rates are $147.00 for temporaries provided by the Brookings Utilities and $15.00 for connecting services provided by others. To have a temporary service installed, call (605) 697-8408. You will need a wiring certificate if you are providing your own temporary.

Power Outages

Brookings Municipal Utilities continually installs new equipment and maintains existing equipment to keep outages to a minimum. However, things like storms, accidents, animals contacting energized lines and equipment failure do cause problems from time to time.

In the event of a power outage, please check your own fuses and breakers first. Also, find out if your neighbors are out of power before calling in. This will assist our crews in finding the problem.

If you live in a mobile home park, please check the pedestal outside the mobile home as well as fuses and breakers inside.

If you live in an apartment complex, you should check with your neighbors before calling BMU. If they have power, the problem is very likely a problem within the apartment complex and not one that would involve BMU. You should also check themain breakers for your apartment. These are usually found in a mechanical room or on an outside wall of the apartment building. Please check with your building manager concerning the location of the breakers.

We will be happy to come out and check the power, but if we come and it is the customer’s breaker or another customer problem, there is a $50.00 service charge. The number to call for power outages or power-related problems is (605) 697-8418

New Metering Requirements

All new meter sockets for commercial services are required to be lever-operated jaws and lever-operated bypass. This is because of the difficulty for a business to have an outage because of changing out of the electric meter.

As of June 15, 2000, residential customers, including apartments, are required to have lever operated bypasses (not lever-operated jaws) on meter sockets. This is because of the increase in computers, VCR's, programmable TV's, electronically controlled ovens and digital clocks making it more difficult to change out the meter with an outage. For more information on metering requirements call 697-8418.

Uninterruptible Power Supplies

Brookings Municipal Utilities takes pride in delivering good quality power to your home and business, but occasionally things happen on our system that can affect power quality. If you have sensitive electronic equipment that can not ride through these occasional disturbances on the power system, you may be interested in renting an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) from BMU. We rent them on a month-by-month basis. For more information on these units call 697-8418 or click here for available sizes and monthly costs.
