Approximately 40% of Brookings power requirements are supplied from Western Area Power Administration (WAPA) with power coming from dams along the Missouri River. The other 60% of Brookings power needs are supplied by Missouri River Energy Services (MRES). The primary source of power for MRES is a coal-fired power plant in Wheatland, Wyoming called Laramie River Station.
